Laaast weekend!
This morning I was a little hesitant about going to Tenant farm because I loved being at Loucks so much. Lynne was at Tenant today, and she's really nice.
I started out by making some cornmeal cookies, but we didn't have any cornmeal so I had to go get some from the Loucks farm. I came back and made the cookies dough. Then Amanda came and we rolled out the dough and cut out circles with a cookie cutter and put them on the griddle to cook. Cooking on the griddle is much more work than cooking in an oven. You have to continually spin the griddle so the cookies don't burn and then you have to take them off, flip them over, and put the griddle back on again.
At 11:00 I left early to go pick up Phoebe and head to the Quiet House, where we were supposed to meet Miss Perry and help carry stuff to the chapel for Band of Promise (A silly abstinence campaign against alcohol, swearing, and smoking that we have to do). We met Nigel on the way out (good work, Nigel) and brought everything to the chapel. We were a bit early, so we sat around for a little while before everyone arrived.
After discussing the evils of alcohol and practicing the songs, we headed out. A banner leading the way, we walked down to Cook's Tavern, singing:
I'll drink no more gin sling,
I'll drink no sling made of gin,
No ale[?] or whiskey
Slip or brandy
Wine or any such thing
When we got to the tavern, we stopped singing I'll Drink No More and sang Throw Down the Bottle:
Will you sign the pledge, poor drunkard? We wish to set you free
From appetite and passion, and custom's slavery;
Strong drink has been your ruin we ask you to abstain;
Come throw down the bottle, and never drink again.
Throw down the bottle, throw down the bottle,
Throw down the bottle, and never drink again.
Oh, your wife will smile with gladness to know that you have signed:
She'll bid adieu to sadness, for comfort she will find;
Within your home what pleasure what happiness will reign;
Then throw down the bottle, and never drink again.
Oh, your children, too, will bless you, they'll dance with very glee,
And joyfully caress you, as they climb upon your knee;
Their little eyes will sparkle, as they sing the joyous strain,
We've thrown down the bottle, and we'll never drink again,
Then come along, my brother, tho' fallen you may rise;
You then may help another who now in bondage lies;
The best of men will bless you; you will not live in vain;
So, throw down the bottle, and never drink again.
After that, we recited some "words of wisdom" and marched back to the chapel, singing I'll Drink No More again.
Then we recited the pledge of abstinence and went for dinner at the Blue House. I went inside and prepared for my presentation by mixing lemonade and putting the cookies and cups on the trays.
I finished up my lunch and then presented, with Phoebe handing out the refreshments for me. It went well, I think! I didn't really mess up and I was able to answer most of the questions. I'm glad it's over with anyway.
After my presentation, me and Phoebe cleaned up the dishes and went our separate ways. I went back to the farm, where Amanda was already. We then made some pinwheels with dough, freshly made butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Yum. And we cooked those in the kettle oven with coals on top and underneath the pot.
Then Derek came in and Lynne asked him to give us jobs. First we went out and carried in some wood from the woodpile to put in the woodbox inside. After that we took out the cow, Sugar, and went for a walk around town, making a quick stop at the General Store to pick up some cornmeal. Sugar also made a stop at the store, when Derek brought her INSIDE THE BUILDING!!! He's so funny :P
By the time we got back to Tenant farm, it was tea time! We had a DELICIOUS oatmeal cake with brown sugar icing, pinwheels, and some of the cornmeal cookies. With lemonade AKA "river water" to drink. Emily and some other older guy also came for tea, and Barbara was there randomly as well. After a while, everyone headed their separate ways and Lynne and I did the dishes. Amanda went off to do drama at Crysler Hall.
Dishes were soon done, and Derek came in from doing his chores, so then he took me down to Loucks Farm to help milk the cows! Milking the cows is a public activity and they do it at 4 pm. I have never milked a cow before, so Derek taught me how - clamp and squeeze. He started off milking and then I took over. It actually wasn't as hard as I thought! The hardest part was getting the milk inside the bucket! I have bad aim.
I milked the cow for a little while and then let the visitors have a turn. Derek told me I could go back to Tenant farm, so I did, but Lynne had nothing for me to do, so I went to see the end of the drama practice. They are doing some play about a drunk father who gets arrested? Phoebe is the mother and Nigel is the Jailer.
Miss Perry let them finish drama early, so we changed early and left, after dropping off a paper with Lynne!
